Welcome to OPEIU Local 174

The Office and Professional Employees International Union was chartered in 1945 by the American Federation of Labor. At the time of its founding, the membership of the Union numbered 22,000.  The Union now counts 145,000 members and is one of the larger unions in the AFL-CIO. As it moves into its 57th year of chartered existence, the OPEIU has local unions functioning throughout the fifty states, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia

The Union represents and bargains for both private and public sector professional and semiprofessional workers laboring in most of the major industries in the United States. The OPEIU is also affiliated with a number of state and national professional organizations.

OPEIU members work in industries varied as motion picture industry, banking, insurance, universities, shipping, hospitals and nursing homes, utilities, transportation, manufacturing, paper companies, hotels and many more. They are in positions as varied as computer programmers and operators, engineers, secretaries, nurses, accountants, attorneys, transit supervisors, security guards, bank tellers, administrative aides, quality control personnel, doctors, models, police and others.

OPEIU Local 174 is the Motion Picture Industry Union representing over 1700 workers employed in administrative support positions employed at Universal Studios, Uni Music Group, Universal Television, Fox Studios, Warner Bros Studios, Warner Bros. Studio Facilities, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Motion Picture Health and Pension Plan, Cinematographers Guild Administration, Secretly Music Group, IATSE Training Trust Fund and Walt Disney Enterprises

OPEIU Local 174 members have gained major through the collective bargaining process in:

Wage Increases, Medical Benefits, Pension Benefits, Overtime Pay, Vacation Leave, Sick Leave, Representation, Grievance and Arbitration, Temporary Job Placement and Job Referral Service.

Waiver of Premiums Due is Available to Certain Individuals

For members with a Los Angeles County or Ventura County home address on file with MPI as of January 1, 2025, MPI will grant a waiver of premiums for health benefits due for January, February and March 2025 to each member enrolled in the Active Health Plan (who is subject to premium payments for active coverage for themselves and/or their dependents) who was eligible and enrolled on January 1, 2025, if the ZIP code of their home address on file with MPI was in a mandatory fire evacuation zone. While there will be no refunds, those members who have already paid a premium for the applicable period will be issued a credit for the next premium payment period. Your members who are eligible for this benefit will be contacted by MPI directly. As of the date of this notice, your members who are eligible for this benefit must have an address on file with MPI that falls within one of the following ZIP codes: 90046 90265 90290 91001 91006 91024 91104 91302 91342 91367 90049 90272 90402 91003 91011 91103 91107 91307 91344 93510

Waiver of COBRA Premiums Due is Available to Certain Individuals

For members with a Los Angeles County or Ventura County home address on file with MPI as of January 1, 2025, MPI will grant a waiver of COBRA premiums for health benefits due for January, February and March 2025 to each member enrolled in COBRA on January 1, 2025 if the ZIP code of their home address on file with MPI was in a mandatory fire evacuation zone and the member was displaced for two weeks (14 days) or more from their home due to the disaster.

While there will be no refunds, your members who have already paid a COBRA premium for the applicable period will be issued a credit for the next premium payment period. Your members who are eligible for this benefit will be contacted by MPI directly. As of the date of this notice, your members who are eligible for this benefit must have an address on file with MPI that falls within one of the following ZIP codes: 90046 90265 90290 91001 91006 91024 91104 91302 91342 91367 90049 90272 90402 91003 91011 91103 91107 91307 91344 93510

Emotional Support Resources

Members are reminded that there are a variety of resources available to them and their loved ones through Optum. Your members may visit Optum at ww.optumwellbeing.com where they can find emotional support resources and information related to mental health, traumatic events, natural disasters, and grief and loss. To access other mental health-related benefit information available through Optum, visit www.liveandworkwell.com and browse with access code: MPIPHP. Your members may also call (866) 248-4094 to speak with an Optum mental health specialist trained to help those who are overwhelmed, depressed, or are searching for answers.

Replacement Glasses May Be Available

Members who have lost or broken glasses due to the fires may contact VSP at (800) 877-7195 to get assistance. Replacement glasses may be available even if the benefit was previously used. Your members without VSP coverage can contact their local American Red Cross chapter or shelter, or call (800) 733-2767, to ask about support for replacement eyewear, which may include VSP Eyes of Hope gift certificates or an alternative solution. Your members are encouraged to visit VSP’s website, www.vsp.com/naturaldisaster-resources, for additional information.

Early Refills of Medications

Members who reside in Los Angeles and Ventura counties may request refills of their prescription medications lost during the fires. To do so, your members can visit any in-network pharmacy and request a refill of their medications. The pharmacy staff will enter a code that will allow a refill of the prescription. Pharmacy staff are aware of this code. Also, CVS Specialty Pharmacy can make early refills and ship medications to alternate locations, if needed.

Local 174 is restructuring so that we can overcome the challenges in the rapid development and adoption of technology we are faced with in our industry. We are  are also moving towards creating google platforms so you are aware of what is happening at the bargaining table .
